Since 1979, the KIIS Spain I summer program has offered students intermediate Spanish-language study in the charming city of Segovia. During this month-long program, students develop their language skills and immerse themselves in Spanish life. The program includes a homestay.
Only 60 miles north of Madrid, Segovia is an attractive provincial capital in the foothills of the Guadarrama mountains. The city retains the strong, traditional character of Old Castile and has a visible history that dates back to pre-Roman times— Segovia’s world-renowned castles, aqueducts, museums and beautiful environs provide ample evidence. Segovia also offers a weekly open-air market, picturesque plazas and cafes, a lively nightlife and frequent cultural events such as the weeklong Fiestas de San Juan y San Pedro at the end of June.
The pleasant early-summer weather and congeniality of the Spanish people lend a spirit of cordial hospitality to the city. Segovia's location also makes it ideal for individual and group excursions. In additionl to daily classes, the
Spain I program includes an all-day orientation to Madrid and group excursions to world-heritage sites such as Toledo and Salamanca. On select weekends, students may travel independently in Spain and beyond.
Please note: All courses are in Spanish. Students wishing to participate in the Spain I program must have at least 12 hours and no more than 18 hours of college-level Spanish or the equivalent at time of departure. Students are expected to speak Spanish on excursions, at group meals and in all public places.
SPAN 345 Topics: Spanish Pronunciation
SPAN 370 Spanish Conversation
SPAN 371 Spanish Composition & Grammar
NOTE: All courses are taught in Spanish.

Please note: All courses are in Spanish. Students wishing to participate in the Spain I program must have at least 12 hours and no more than 18 hours of college-level Spanish or the equivalent at time of departure. Students are expected to speak Spanish on excursions, at group meals and in all public places. Each student must take at least one three-credit hour course. However, students typically take two three-credit hour courses. The program fee is the same if you take one or two courses. A student cannot take more than two three-credit hour courses. All course credit will be issued by Western Kentucky University. The WKU Registrar will transfer your grades to your home institution approximately 6-8 weeks after the completion of the program. We encourage all students - long before KIIS program departure - to contact their Academic Advisor, Department Head, and/or the Study Abroad Office to determine the credit equivalencies at their home institution (that is, confirm ahead of time with your college or university how your desired KIIS courses will count towards your major and/or overall degree requirements). Course offerings are subject to change according to enrollment.
A key feature of the KIIS Spain I program is that all students live with carefully chosen Spanish families in Segovia. This affords students the opportunity to develop their language skills as well as experience daily life in Spain. Generally, no more than two or three students will be placed with each family. All meals are taken with the host family, who will also provide towels, bed linens, and laundry facilities. Most families live in or near the city center and relatively close to our classroom building, the Centro KIIS, which is located in the beautiful and historic Plaza Mayor of Segovia.
Please note: Many Europeans smoke, and KIIS cannot guarantee that the housing will be smoke-free, either from the occupants or their guests. Host families will attempt to accommodate special diets and a smoke-free environment, but KIIS cannot guarantee that all requests can or will be met entirely. Students with serious dietary restrictions or acute need for smoke-free conditions should bear this in mind when considering whether the home stay-based program is suitable for them.
